What is Microneedling?

Microneedling (also known as collagen induction therapy) is a procedure that involves using a device with fine needles to create tiny, controlled punctures in the skin’s surface. This stimulates the natural wound healing process, leading to increased production of collagen and elastin, essential proteins that help maintain the skin’s firmness and elasticity.

The stages of the wound healing process include:

  1. Inflammation: The initial punctures trigger an inflammatory response causing the blood vessels in the area to constrict, reducing blood flow and minimising bleeding. White blood cells migrate to the wound to remove bacteria, dead skin cells and debris. Swelling (oedema), heat and redness occurs as a result of the accumulation of blood vessels, fluid and Immune cells. This stage plays a crucial role in preventing infection and excess blood loss.
  2. Proliferation: During the proliferation stage, the cells responsible for producing collagen and elastin (fibroblasts) begin to migrate to the wound site, laying down a scaffold of tissue to close the wound site. New blood vessels continue to form within the tissue, a process known as angiogenesis. This is essential for providing oxygen and nutrients to the healing tissue, whilst the fibroblasts actively produce collagen giving strength and structure to the skin.
  3. Remodelling: The collagen fibres that were initially laid down in a disorganised manner during the proliferation phase start to reorganize and align along the natural lines of tension in the skin, strengthening the newly formed collagen fibres.
  4. Maturation: The maturation phase of wound healing is a continuation of the remodelling phase, focusing on further refinement and strengthening of the healed tissue. The collagen fibres undergo changes in their composition and cross linking, enhancing their strength, durability and stability whilst making them resistant to stress. The blood vessels continue to mature, further enhancing the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to the skin. This process can extend over several months contributing to youthful skin.

Microneedling is commonly used to improve:

  • Fine lines, Wrinkles and expression lines
  • Various Scars including acne scars, surgical scars and stretch marks
  • Skin texture and Elasticity
  • Skin tightening and firmness
  • Large pores and skin tone
  • Pigmentation
  • Product absorption
  • Overall skin radiance
  • Cellulite and fat
  • Stimulate hair follicles (scalp)

Results:

Day 1: The treated area is likely to be red and slightly swollen and your skin may feel slightly tender or sensitive to the touch. This discomfort is temporary and should subside within a day or two.

Day 2: The intense redness from the first day will subside and the swelling may continue to decrease. The skin might still feel slightly tender to touch. Your skin may start to feel slightly tight or dry as it starts the healing process. Its important to keep the treated area moisturised as recommended by your practitioner.

Day 3: On day three, your skin will feel dry, and you may experience mild itching as the skin continues to heal. Keep the skin moisturised and avoid scratching the treated area/picking at any scabs or flakes to prevent irritation or disrupting the healing process.

Day 4: Your skin may start to look brighter and more radiant as it continues to heal. The skin will start to feel less tight and more comfortable. However, you may still experience some dryness or minor flaking, which is normal as the healing process progresses. Remember to keep your skin moisturised.

Day 5: Five days after microneedling, your skin may start to feel smoother and more even in texture. However, you may still experience some dryness and some individuals might still experience mild flaking.

Day 6: On day six, your skin is likely to continue improving. Any peeling or flaking should be minimal at this point. Your skin’s texture might appear more refined, and you could start noticing a subtle glow. However, you may still experience slight dryness which is normal.

Day 7: On day seven, your skin should have made significant progress in terms of healing. Most of the sensitivity should have subsided by now. Your skin may feel smoother, look brighter, and have an improved overall tone and texture.

Day 8: Eight days after microneedling, your skin should be fully healed, and you will see significant improvements in the overall appearance of your skin. You may also notice a reduction in fine lines and wrinkles, as well as continued improved to the skin’s texture, tone and radiance. After a course of treatments, it is important to maintain your results with maintenance sessions and a skincare routine provided by your skincare professional. This ensures optimal results and long-lasting benefits from the Microneedling treatment.
